Weekly Progress (week 1 - week 7)
Week 1
Lecture/ Tutorial/ Practical: 06/04/2023
Draping a SKIRT.
First, the basics of how do we carry out the cutting out of a garment is explained. That is following the grainline.
after a clear understanding of the grainline and the cross grainline, the next task of making a draped skirt was carried out. lines were drawn onto the piece of fabric indicating the bust point, and the waist line.
The darts are eventually pinned accordingly after securing the center front of the fabric by double pinning it.
The same method and technique is carried on the back of the skirt. Then the darts and side seams are being marked by a mechanical pencil for the ultimate accuracy, further minor alterations can be made when the fabric is laid flat.
Week 2
Lecture/ Tutorial/ Practical: 13/04/2023
ARM FOAM
Making the Foam Arm was one of the first activities that we did in garment draping classes. The pattern was drafted for us by our lecturer in a way to mimic the arm shape of a real body.
The activity was carried out on two layers of calico fabric and the lines were done by machine stitching red and black colored thread throughout the arm pattern.
The arm is eventually sewn and filled with polyester fiber.
After sewing the lines and filling the arms, the job is done by closing both ends of the arm dummy. This activity was to ensure that if draping is being carried out and sleeves are included, this is a way to facilitate the job of draping a garment involving sleeves.
DRAPING BODICE
The next task was to drape the front and back of a bodice, where darts have to be included in a way to shape the body.
The above pictures shows how the Darts are being formed by slashing the fabric in order to create a flat surface to work on.
The darts are eventually marked with a mechanical pencils to ensure accuracy and laid flat to be drawn out. PRINCESS LINE
For the princess line, four different pieces of fabric were needed to carry out this activity.
The first front panel is simply pinned and traced according to the draping tape. slashing is done when needed to ensure flatness of the fabric
Week 4 - Week 7
27/04/2023 - 18/05/2023
DRAPING A BASIC DRESS
With the help of the notes that our lecturer gave us, we were required to drape a dress with two darts at the back and a single dart in the front. The dress should include a bateau neckline where the shoulder back dart can be cancelled for that instance.
